Last Year at Emerson High School: Career Day!


Dozens of professionals from diverse fields visited Emerson High School today to share their knowledge with students, providing valuable information about their careers to more than 1,200 Emersonians. These professionals lended time from their busy schedule to add another unforgettable day to Emerson High School’s last year.

“It’s truly exciting to come back to Emerson and give back to the school”, said alum Elvis Jardines, now a well know lawyer that graduated in 1980.

“It’s is a competitive world and you must be prepared to face the challenges”, accountant Susan Tacuri told bilingual students, after she shared he expertise of the financial world. Ms. Tacuri also serves our community as the Union City Parking Authority Accountant, where she valued and respected by employees, the administration and the seating commissioners.



College professor and one of the most respected members of our faculty at Emerson, Mr. McMullen, shared his knowledge and his encouragement with an attentive group of Emersonians.

Union City Commissioner, Christopher Irizarry, a lifelong Union City resident, narrated his trajectory, explaining the diversity of jobs he had throughout his life to arrive at the position if CEO and President of North Hudson Community Action Corporation, the most popular and visited center of assistance to the community in Hudson County.

José Avelar, the always youthful veteran reporter of El Nuevo Hudson, gave a detailed description of his responsibilities as a reporter, a job that has made his a household name among the many who read El Nuevo Hudson, a Spanish addition to The Jersey Journal. “To be an effective reporter you must be trusted by people. You are always held by the high standards your readers held your last article. You must be fair and balanced, and always be willing to listen without making judgment; that’s for the editorial pages”, declared Avelar to more than three hundred bilingual students who, after the presentation, asked questions and contributed to the discussion with asserted comments.

Hoy, 15 de abril del 2008, brindó a los estudiantes de Emerson High School su vasto conocimiento de la profesión.



Carmen Machado, one of our finest teachers spoke to bilingual students about the importance of discipline and commitment when choosing a career. Keeping with the “lead by example” logo, Ms. Machado spoke about her personal experience relating how similar it was to Emerson High School students.
