Union City High School celebrates Veterans Day!

Union City High School celebrated today its first Veteran’s Day assembly honoring our veterans with appreciation and respect. UCHS Principal David Wilcomes thanked all veterans for their service to our country and commended and thanked two heroes, Gunnery Sgt. Reyes and Lt. Col. Hansen, for organizing “an outstanding tribute to our servicemen and servicewomen.” Gunnery Sgt. Reyes and Lt. Col. Hansen run the local ROTC Program, helping hundreds of students, teaching values, discipline, and leading by example. Here are some images of today’s event. (Photos: Union City High School)

UCHS Vice Principal, Mr. Daniel Frezzo and Sgt. Reyes. One of the great American teachers, Frezzo has been an educator for more than three decades. Thousands of students have fed from the superlative knowledge of this teacher. I am always proud to point out that he was my History I teacher in my freshman year at Emerson High School in the late 70′s, when Frezzo and a legion of mostly Italian-American teachers taught a generation of Cuban exiles exhibiting commendable patience, since most of us did not speak a word of English, so they became ESL teachers as well as lecturing their subjects. Sgt. Reyes is a true example to all of us, a Gulf War Veteran who is totally dedicated to help the young people in our community. It is always an honor to be counted among his friends. He was recently appointed Union City’s Veterans Affairs Monitor by UC Mayor Brian P. Stack.
