West New York Mayor Silverio “Sal” Vega is hoping that negotiations with the town’s unions will reduce the number of layoffs needed to bridge a $5 million budget gap.
West New York has filed plans with the state to lay off 22 cops and 51 other town employees as a way to save $5 million and avoid a tax hike, officials said.
However, talks are ongoing with three unions representing the town’s 112 police officers and about 340 other town workers, Mayor Silverio “Sal” Vega said, and if other savings can be found, the number of layoffs can be reduced.
Notices were sent to all town employees today alerting them to the plan.
