Dr. Felix Roque leads a march in West New York as he called for the recall of Mayor Sal Vega.
Over 200 protesters marched from Union City into West New York yesterday, calling for Mayor Silverio “Sal” Vega to be recalled from office and denouncing recent tax increases.
The march was organized by West New York physician Dr. Felix Roque, who said he intends to force a recall of Vega and the town’s four other commissioners.
Speaking in Spanish to a fired-up crowd, Roque said he and his team will gather the requisite 5,000 signatures of registered voters in the next few weeks to force the recall.
If there is a recall election, Roque said he will run against Vega, whose term is slated to end in 2011.
The march started just south of the West New York border in Union City at Bergenline and 48th Street and ended 17 blocks north in a parking lot on 65th Street.
Along the way, the crowd, which stretched a block long, waved banners and signs and chanted, “No more taxes” and “Recall Vega.” Dozens of drivers showed support by honking horns.
