“FIGHT CHICK” ON NEXT WEEKEND’S FIGHTS!

Frances Martel

Cambridge, MA- It is safe to say, looking at next week’s schedule, that PPV has once again gone out of hand, bringing us a handful of small fighters that promise mild entertainment and the perennial possibility of an upset. Perhaps this week’s card is significantly less egregious in its celebrity showboating than Oscar De La Hoya’s (39-5, 30 KOs) against the mediocre Steve Forbes (33-6, 9 KOs), but with next Saturday’s PPV lineup including such breakout stars as Glenn Donaire (17-3-1, 9 KOs) of “being Nonito Donaire’s (19-1, 12 KOs) brother” fame and the once-stellar Jorge Arce (48-4-1, 37 KOs), being at least mildly outraged at the pricing is in order.

GLENN DONAIRE- NOT A COMMERCIAL FORCE

The question then arises, of course-when is being at least mildly outraged at the pricing of a fight not in order? Well, it depends on how much you respect the careers of the fighters and how likely you are to enjoy the match-ups. Many fans will watch their favorite boxers fight a potato sack if PPV advertises it as the fight of the century (a label that seems to apply to anything from Floyd Mayweather-Oscar De La Hoya to Oleg Maskaev-Hasim Rahman II. Yes, I am still bitter about Maskaev-Rahman a) being a fight that happened at all, twice and b) being on PPV). I will admit to being ready, willing, an able to watch now light heavyweight (175 lbs.) champion Joe Calzaghe (45-0, 32 KOs) dance around the ring with a complete corpse if he chooses to fight one. Watching him fight Bernard Hopkins (48-5-1, 32 KOs), perhaps the most boring fighter of our generation, was enough of a testament to my loyalty. But something tells me Glenn Donaire lacks the commercial command of a Calzaghe or, for some, a Miguel Cotto (32-0, 26 KOs) or Manny Pacquiao (46-3-2, 35 KOs). Sure, Donaire has the distinct advantage of being Filipino and thus sitting on a goldmine of overly zealous boxing enthusiasts that will wave their flags at anything the boxing world sells them with a compatriot in the ring, but being knocked out by Vic Darchinyan (29-1-1, 23 KOs) just shouldn’t be enough to demand your own PPV event.
