Cambridge, MA- Boxing is by no means a feminine sport. It is as manly as any game where the objective is to mutilate the opponent’s face as much as possible, and those who follow it often expect those who practice to adopt a certain persona along with their occupation. Most don’t care enough about female boxing to criticize the girls, but the thought of an effeminate man entering the ring and reigning over his division sends shivers down the spines of many that like to identify with these alpha males and often refuse to recognize the homosexual undertones in MMA. Yet the wide acceptance of “girly” men like Oscar De La Hoya (38-5, 30 KOs) tells a different story, one of increasing tolerance in the boxing world.
DE LA HOYA: NOT EXACTLY A MACHO MAN
Of course, with the 1-2 punch of his scandalous cross-dressing pictures and his failed singing career, De La Hoya has become the gold standard of girly boxers, despite being a happily married father of four. He has been greatly chastised for both of his endeavors, but the mere fact that his contributions or position in the sport have not been questioned demonstrates improvement in our collective mindset. De La Hoya has gone on tour singing songs that would make George Michael look like Rambo, and has been photographed in the outfit of a prostitute (and in the company of a prostitute), yet Golden Boy Promotions is as strong as ever, boxers under his jurisdiction continue to respect him, and De La Hoya’s individual worth to the boxing world has not been undermined at all.
